Months after the release of that advisory, Yale researchers found that byproducts, called acetals, form when flavoring agents mix with solvents in the liquid. It is not yet known if this has negative effects on the body, but Sven-Eric Jordt, PhD, one of the study’s authors, says he hopes that the FDA will begin to study the short- and long-term effects of inhaled acetals. Under the PACT Act, delivery sales of electronic nicotine delivery systems must also comply with state, local or tribal laws involving excise taxes on these devices.
One in five Minnesota teens (grades 6-12) have asthma, a serious chronic disease that can make it difficult to breathe. In addition, 5 of the 11 vapours tested (including 4 that were cytotoxic) reduced HUVEC proliferation and one of them increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) [24]. Three of the most cytotoxic vapours—with effects similar to those of conventional high-nicotine CS extracts—also caused comparable morphological changes [24]. Endothelial cell migration is an important mechanism of vascular repair than can be disrupted in smokers due to endothelial dysfunction [25, 26]. In the first study, researchers looked at the impact of e-cigarettes on lipids and glucose in the blood. They recruited 476 healthy human participants without cardiovascular disease who were either nonsmokers, e-cigarette-only smokers, smokers of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and those who smoked tobacco cigarettes only.
This guidance is intended to support healthcare providers in their understanding and tracking of -cigarette and vaping product use. 20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years. Additional data, rates and trends can be found in the American Lung Association’s Tobacco Trends Brief.
"Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. "Even with the current relatively low use of e-cigarettes among adults – 3.7 percent – health care costs are already substantial, and likely to increase in the future if youth continue to use this product," said Max. Support increased for all e‑cigarette policy options among the Australian population (Figure 6).
However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5]. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47].
Vape flavors like mint and mango appeal to young people and mask the harshness of nicotine. The small, discreet size of vapes and e-cigarettes make them easy to conceal at school and home. The bottom line is e-cigarettes and vapes are unsafe for kids, teens and young adults. Nicotine is harmful to the developing brain and the use of e-cigarettes as a teen increases the likelihood of smoking cigarettes as an adult. The chemical additives and flavoring can also cause unwanted health effects.
When I exhale, the vapor is gone within 10 seconds, along with the smell. Funny how just about 10 years ago people were still allowed to smoke actual cigarettes in some restaurants and I didn’t see anyone walking out on their meal due to the smell coming from the smoking section. I’m not saying it was a wonderful arrangement, but people dealt with it.
E-Cigarettes, also called personal vaporizers or "vapes", present another way for smokers to ingest nicotine. E-Cigarettes have been marketed to young adults and adolescents through the use of candy and fruit flavors. They are also touted by some users as a "safer" alternative to smoking, and as a way to either quit smoking cigarettes, or to smoke in places where cigarette smoking is not allowed.
Parent groups and anti-tobacco advocates immediately criticized the decision, which comes after years of pushing regulators to keep menthol and other flavors that can appeal to teens off the market. In 2023, 309.4 million units of e-cigarette products were sold in U.S. retail stores nationwide. An e-cigarette’s appearance is determined by the shape and size of its components.
All this evidence would suggest that e-cigarettes are potentially less harmful than conventional cigarettes (Fig. 2) [11, 14, 22, 24, 27,28,29]. Importantly, however, most of these studies have investigated only short-term effects [10, 14, 15, 22, 27,28,29, 31, 32], and the long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption on human health are still unclear and require further study. Vapes come in colorful, fun, and unique product designs, along with many flavors, all of which come together as part of the attraction for youth who believe that these products are not addictive and are safe to use. Many users believe vaping will reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
Research on health effects of secondhand exposure to e-cigarettes is still emerging. The quantity of these carcinogens is less that what is found in conventional cigarettes. While some young people may be able to quit e-cigarette use on their own, others, particularly daily users, are likely to find this to be very difficult.
The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals. The rapidly rising rates of use in young people and the high rates of daily use strongly suggest that many are addicted to nicotine and will have difficulty in stopping use of all tobacco products. One study found that people who use only e-cigarettes increase their risk of developing lung disease by about 30% compared with nonusers. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are devices used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
The FDA has the legal authority to regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source, including synthetic nicotine. In 2016, the FDA established a rule for e-cigarettes and their liquid solutions. Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine derived from tobacco, they are now subject to government regulation as tobacco products.
This ban excludes disposable e-cigarette devices, which are sold in many appealing flavors and are relatively inexpensive. And are now the most popular type of e-cigarette used by adolescents. Nicotine is highly addictive and may lead to nicotine cravings and development of tolerance (the need to use more often in order to have the same effect). Nicotine addiction can negatively affect relationships and impair performance at school, at work, or in other activities. Researchers have also identified vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some THC-containing vaping products, as the main—but possibly not the only—cause of the illness.
