Beginning August 1, 2019, Minnesota law prohibits the use of these products indoors where cigarette use is prohibited, including bars and restaurants. A 2021 study found that daily e-cigarette usage among tobacco smokers can increase the likelihood of quitting smoking eightfold. Researchers assessed data from the 2014–2019 Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, focusing on smokers who were not planning to quit smoking at the start of the period. However, a 2019 study into the long-term health effects of vaping found that people using e-cigarettes had a higher risk of respiratory disease than people who never smoked. The authors first created a comprehensive database of tobacco product flavor prohibition and restriction laws across the United States, including both state and local statutes. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes.
With regards to toxicity, little is known about the effects of humectants when they are heated and chronically inhaled. Indeed, the latter study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a PG exposure of 430–603 mg/m3, which is higher than the levels reported to cause airway irritation (average 309 mg/m3) based on a human study [55]. The same study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a glycerol exposure of 348–495 mg/m3 [57], which is close to the levels reported to cause airway irritation in rats (662 mg/m3) [58]. Results from in vitro studies are in general agreement with the limited number of in vivo studies.
E-cigarettes are available in flavors like cherry, bubble gum, and cotton candy, and are allowed to be advertised on TV, which may increase their appeal for children and teens. As of July 31, 2024, Poison Centers have managed 4,955 e-cigarette and liquid nicotine related exposure cases. For more information about the health effects of e-cigarettes, visit CardioSmart.org/StopSmoking. People who use e-cigarettes are significantly more likely to develop heart failure compared with those who have never used them, according to one of the largest prospective studies to date investigating possible links between vaping and heart failure. The findings are being presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session.
The FDA has the legal authority to regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source, including synthetic nicotine. In 2016, the FDA established a rule for e-cigarettes and their liquid solutions. Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine derived from tobacco, they are now subject to government regulation as tobacco products.
However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5]. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47].
One study detected vitamin E acetate in the lung fluid of 48 out of 51 EVALI patients sampled across 16 states. By contrast, lung fluid samples taken from healthy people did not contain the vitamin. EVALI is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. The smoke-free and tobacco-free policies at schools, businesses, healthcare institutions, and other organizations should also cover e-cigarettes. This will help non-users avoid being exposed to potentially harmful e-cigarette aerosol.
E-cigarettes contain many of the same cancer-causing chemicals that regular cigarettes do. Nicotine is highly addictive, and most e-cigarettes include it as a main ingredient. The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The rise of e-cigarettes and vaping has raised concerns that another generation may become dependent on nicotine. The AMA has been a leading force to eliminate public smoking and warn people about the dangers of smoking, including secondhand smoke, since the 1960s.
But e-cigarettes haven't proved to be safer or more effective than nicotine-replacement medications in helping people stop smoking. He was a founding member of the Society for Nicotine and Tobacco Research. As a public health researcher, he has studied numerous issues related to nicotine use and policy, with some recent work focused on cigarette and e-cigarette use among adolescents and young adults. Lynn T. Kozlowski is an internationally recognized expert on tobacco use, e-cigarettes and nicotine policy. He can speak to the media about these issues, including trends in both smoking and vaping (including Juuling). Fears that e-cigarettes have made smoking seem normal again or even led to people taking up tobacco smoking are not so far being realised based on the evidence assessed by this important independent review.
This includes quit coaching, up to 2 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy, and a youth digital program for those ages 13-17. Vuse, owned by Reynolds American, and Juul control about 60% of the market, while hundreds of disposable brands account for the rest. While nicotine is the addictive substance in cigarettes, most of the harm from smoking comes from the thousands of other chemicals in tobacco smoke, many of which are toxic.
In King County, youth e-cigarette use is now higher than the use of conventional cigarettes. The ACS does not recommend the use of e-cigarettes as a cessation method. No e-cigarette has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe and effective cessation product. Some people use vaping to curb their appetite, but there’s no proof that vaping helps with weight loss.
We also have leading brands of e-liquid from some of the biggest manufacturers in the UK. So, if you feel like trying more than one, make sure you check out our multi-buy deals. Unlike cigarette butts, e-cigarette waste won’t biodegrade even under severe conditions. E-cigarettes left on the street eventually break down into microplastics and chemicals that flow into the storm drains to pollute our waterways and wildlife.
New York State law restricts the sale of flavored vapor products intended or reasonably expected to be used with or for the consumption of nicotine, regardless of whether the nicotine is derived from tobacco or synthetic. They are sometimes called e-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, tank systems, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
"If there was good evidence that people were using e-cigarettes just to quit smoking, there would be wide support," Benowitz says. "The problem is most of the e-cigarette use in the U.S. is dual use with cigarettes." People use e-cigs in places or situations where they can't smoke, like in a restaurant, but continue lighting up when they can, he explains. "My reading of the evidence is that it is quite convincing that e-cigarettes are helping some people quit smoking." Many young e-cigarette users reported throwing away, improperly recycling, or littering the devices. Only 15% of young e-cigarette users reported disposing of empty pods or disposable vapes by dropping them off or sending them for electronic recycling.
Steer clear of unregulated mods unless you have lots of experience vaping and a decent knowledge of electronics. Like disposable vapes, these devices don't allow modification to the battery and heating element. The difference is that they're rechargeable and refillable, letting you swap in a fresh pod or cartridge of vape juice when the old one runs out.
A note from Cleveland ClinicNicotine poisoning is on the rise, mostly due to the availability of some of the newer forms of nicotine that are now popular. Children eat cigarettes and can be accidentally poisoned by touching, tasting or swallowing liquid nicotine or liquid nicotine-containing products used in e-cigarettes. To keep you and your family and pets safe from nicotine poisoning, the most effective approach would be to eliminate or ban tobacco-containing or nicotine-containing products in your home. If you're interested in quitting smoking, your healthcare team is here, ready and looking forward to helping you. All tobacco products contain nicotine and are harmful to your health. All are technically capable of causing poisoning if taken in large enough quantities.
Screen all patients, encourage them to quit, and refer patients to evidence-based services for help quitting. However, nicotine used in vaping liquids is often sourced and extracted from tobacco plants. More recently, products containing synthetic nicotine, which is created through chemical processes, have been made available in Canada.
E-cigarettes hit the market in the early 2000s and have since soared in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. Once believed to be a "safer" way to smoke, vaping is now considered a public health crisis by many health groups. Stay up to date on the adverse health effects of smoking and vaping tobacco while gaining important guidance on how to counsel patients on the risks and quitting.
Beginning July 1, 2019, Illinois law prohibits the sale of tobacco products, including these products, to people younger than age 21. The smoke also caused damage to the lungs and bladders of mice, indicating that it may increase the risks of developing lung and bladder cancer. Since e-cigarettes arrived in the U.S. in 2007, they have been investigated by addiction researchers as possible cessation devices for adults trying to quit combustible, or regular, cigarettes.
Nicotine levels ranged 0.10–0.32 mg puff−1 across the 3 study products. From the 19 proposed HPHCs specifically of concern in e-cigarettes, only 3 (glycerol, isoamyl acetate and propylene glycol) were quantified. As crucial as it is to health to quit smoking conventional cigarettes, it is unwise, as a rule, to take up vaping as a substitute, Christiani emphasizes.
I can go for six months at a time without catching a nasty, lingering cough. My clothing doesn’t reek of smoke all of the time and my car actually smells nice. So, though they are far from perfect, I am enjoying the changes that not smoking cigarettes has brought to my life. "Since there is no safe tobacco product, eventual abstinence from all tobacco products is the end goal," says Dr. Hyland, who is senior author on the new work. Adults in the U.S. who used e-cigarettes daily and also smoked combustible cigarettes were more likely to quit smoking than those who smoked but used e-cigarettes less frequently. Justice announced the task force that they say will address the illegal domestic distribution and sale of electronic cigarettes.
However, the reason it belongs on this list is that it includes several safety features that help keep it from overheating and catching fire. This isn't a particularly common problem with disposable vapes, but we appreciate the extra attention to safety. Like the BC5000 profiled above, the ELFBAR 600 is free of diacetyl and vitamin E acetate and has a solidly sealed liquid compartment. The airflow allows for a nice mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw in which you hold each puff in your mouth for a bit before inhaling. This could be a little easier on your lungs, since the vapor can cool down before you breathe it in.
So, if you are vaping to quit smoking, you should aim to eventually stop vaping too. In 2022, UK experts reviewed the international evidence and found that "in the short and medium term, vaping poses a small fraction of the risks of smoking". Vapes are electronic devices that let you inhale nicotine in an aerosol, or vapour, instead of smoke. This is done by heating a solution (e-liquid) that typically contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and nicotine. Vapes come in many shapes and sizes but they have the same basic components, including a battery, sensor, and atomizer/ flavor cartridge.
There have also been cases of e-cigarettes exploding or catching fire. Some chronic users have developed obstructions in their lung pathways that cause them to suffer 'asthma-like' symptoms. Similar to Wyoming, the state's vast rural areas might contribute to difficulty enforcing regulations surrounding youth vaping. West Virginia came in second place, with 28 percent of teens vaping last year. The large rural area may make it more difficult to enforce the state's vaping laws. Rural areas also tend to have less access to clinics and resources about the health harms surrounding vaping.
To date, FDA has authorized 34 tobacco- and menthol-flavored e-cigarette products and devices. These products have undergone rigorous scientific review, including toxicologic assessments, and have been found by FDA to meet the statutory public health standard. Vaping is often thought of as safer than cigarette smoking, but vaping causes health problems, too.
Research has also shown flavor chemicals to be toxic in both e-liquid and aerosol form. While many flavor chemicals used in vaping products have been approved for ingestion, they have not yet been tested for safety when aerosolized. Flavor chemicals are typically not listed on e-cigarette packaging, and most e-liquids contain more than one flavor chemical. Benzaldehyde (used in cherry-flavored products) and 2, 5-dimethyprazine (used in chocolate-flavored products), specifically, may harm human health.
Upon the selection of the educational track, students may already have normative perceptions of smoking in vocational schools, such as understanding of smoking as an integral and expected practice in these schools and professions [8]. These perceptions may increase S-SM and other nicotine product use, also among students with better academic performance. Student network characteristics and their associations with smoking vary between schools [28].
Our experts provide care to both kids and adults with complex lung issues from all over Southern California and beyond. Teens today have access to more potentially misleading information than at any other time in history. They’re also bombarded by more sources of advertising than ever before.
When the human body breaks down a foreign substance, one can typically find chemical by-products in hair or urine that provide clues about how it has interacted with cells. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake. In conclusion, the prevalence of susceptibility among adolescents differs by product type. Liking school and academically oriented educational aspirations appear as consistent protective factors, while the use of other tobacco or nicotine products and positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group appear as risk factors.
Guidance exists on best practices on this concept of accountability — known as end-producer responsibility — but isn’t enforced across the industry by any governing body. Substances from inhaled aerosol particles reaching the e-cigarette user’s lungs, blood, and brain. Minnesota’s middle school and high school students who have asthma who vaped or smoked in the past 30 days reported experiencing more frequent symptoms of asthma than students who did not have asthma who had not vaped or smoked.

E-cigarette aerosol video about electronic cigarettes is not harmless; it can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals. While e-cigarettes typically have fewer chemicals than regular cigarettes, researchers found e-cigarettes present their own unique health risks and can increase the odds of chronic cough, phlegm, bronchitis, and asthma. Some cigarette smokers have replaced traditional smoking with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vaping, thinking it is not as dangerous. There are significant negative health effects from smoking cigarettes such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, birth defects, and other health problems relating to nearly every organ of the body.
Friday’s action is part of a sweeping FDA review intended to bring scientific scrutiny to the multibillion-dollar vaping market after years of regulatory delays. Currently the U.S. market includes thousands of fruit- and candy-flavored vapes that are technically illegal but are widely available in convenience stores, gas stations and vape shops. Most teens who vape use disposable e-cigarettes, including brands like Elf Bar, which come in flavors such as watermelon and blueberry ice.
Research from The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 reveals thousands of chemical ingredients in vape products, most of which are not yet identified. Among those the team could identify were several potentially harmful substances, including caffeine, three chemicals never previously found in e-cigarettes, a pesticide and two flavorings linked with possible toxic effects and respiratory irritation. "These cases appear to predominantly affect people who modify their vaping devices or use black market modified e-liquids. This is especially true for vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha. The American Lung Association will continue to urge FDA and Congress to remove all flavored tobacco products from the marketplace.
There are hundreds of brands, and they're sometimes marketed as a way to get your nicotine fix without the danger of cigarettes. Many of those who vape were likely to report issues that kept them from being able to safely dispose of their used and empty e-cigarette products. More than half (57.8%) of those who had used e-cigarettes in the past month found it inconvenient to dispose of e-cigarette waste responsibly.
Krishnan-Sarin points to progress that has been made—finally—in recent years to reduce regular cigarette smoking rates among young adults. In her opinion, the significant decline is due to the success of large-scale public health campaigns and a general awareness among youth that cigarettes are harmful to health. The liquid they contain also has many monikers—it might be called e-juice, e-liquid, cartridges, pods, or oil.
To vape is to inhale vapor created from a liquid heated up inside a device. The devices have many names—vape pens, pod mods, tanks, electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS), e-hookahs and e-cigarettes. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and their repeated use can lead to nicotine addiction or increase the user's risk of addiction. Some e-cigarette brands contain nicotine salts to mask the harshness of nicotine and make it more palatable. As of 2018, all tobacco products must bear the required nicotine addictiveness warning statement on product packages and advertisements in order to warn consumers about the presence of and addictive nature of nicotine.
Until we know more, it is probably best to avoid these products whenever possible, including secondhand smoke. However, vaping early on may increase the chances of smoking ordinary cigarettes later in life. Vaping has become an epidemic among young people in the United States.
E-cigarettes are not risk-free but are believed to cause less harm than smoking. They do not burn tobacco or produce tar or carbon monoxide — two of the most harmful parts of tobacco smoke. Smoking can raise your risk for periodontal disease or disease affecting the gums.
Founded in 1913 as the Harvard-MIT School of Health Officers, the School is recognized as America’s oldest professional training program in public health. This study explored the prevalence of S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN among adolescents in a country with advanced tobacco control regulations. We found that the susceptibility was highest for e-cigarette use, followed by smoking and snus use. S-SM was more common among girls, whereas S-EC and S-SN were more common among boys. In our analysis, levels of carbonyls were considerably reduced relative both to other studies of e-cigarettes and to Ky1R6F cigarette smoke.

Smoking harms nearly every organ in the body ― heart and blood vessel disease; lung disease; cancer (almost anywhere in your body); and impacts to your bones, eyes, teeth, gums, fertility and pregnancy. Individual businesses can prohibit the use of vape devices indoors but this is not required by state law. More adults 18 to 24 years old used e-cigarettes (11.0%, or roughly 3.4 million people) compared with adults 25 to 44 (6.5%) or 45 and older (2.0%). The latest research, published in a July National Center for Health Statistics data brief, shows that in 2021, e-cigarette use was highest among adults 18 to 24 years old.
Surgeon General’s recommendation urging those who influence youth, young adults and people who are pregnant to discourage nicotine use in any form, including e-cigarettes. Advertisements for vapes are also restricted in youth-centered areas like parks. Meanwhile, California was the least popular state for youth vaping, as just six percent of teens had picked up the habit. Louisiana and Montana tied to round out the top five, both with a quarter of teens using e-cigarettes.
Among adolescents who both vaped and smoked traditional cigarettes, a higher proportion in the This is Quitting program, about 51%, reported not vaping nor smoking at seven months, compared with 30% of the assessment-only group. Withdrawal from tobacco products can cause temporary congestion and respiratory discomfort as your lungs and airways begin to heal. Increased mucus production right after quitting smoking may be a positive sign that your respiratory system is recovering. What might be considered safe for the average workplace employee could still pose serious health risks for more medically vulnerable populations.
In our study, there were between-school differences, which appeared larger for girls than boys. In the univariate analyses, most school-level factors either increased or lowered susceptibility. This was especially the case among girls in S-EC and S-SN, and among boys in S-SM. In the multivariate models, most of the school-level associations were weakened.
E-cigarettes can help people stop smoking and are an effective stop smoking tool. There’s no safe level of smoking, so it is important to stop tobacco-use completely. You may have heard different things in the media about the side effects of vaping. This page gives an overview of what we know so far about how vaping can affect your health. The survey also found that Minnesota youth are ill-informed about the health risks of e-cigarettes with 76.1% of 11th graders saying there is either no, slight, or a moderate risk to using e-cigarettes. 11th grade students responding to the student survey said that the top ways they got e-cigarettes included getting products from friends (72.3%), getting products at a vape shop (14.0%), and on the Internet (9.6%). Among 8th grade students, e-cigarette use nearly doubled from 2016 to 2019, and one in four 11th graders now use e-cigarettes. Students in all grades surveyed now use e-cigarettes and vapes at five times the rate of conventional cigarettes. In Australia, during the survey period, it was not legal to obtain e‑cigarettes containing nicotine without a prescription (TGA 2020).
The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals. A recent study compared the acute effects of e-cigarette vapor (with PG/vegetable glycerine plus tobacco flavouring but without nicotine) generated from stainless‐steel atomizer (SS) heating element or from a nickel‐chromium alloy (NC) [92]. Neither the air‐exposed rats nor those exposed to e-cigarette vapor using SS heating elements developed respiratory distress. In contrast, 80% of the rats exposed to e-cigarette vapor using NC heating units developed clinical acute respiratory distress when a 70‐W power setting was employed. Thus, suggesting that operating units at higher than recommended settings can cause adverse effects. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the deleterious effects of battery output voltage are not comparable to those exerted by CS extracts [30] (Figs. 1 and 2). "Our findings are consistent with earlier evidence that sufficient nicotine replacement can be helpful for quitting smoking.
E-cigarettes consist of a mouthpiece, an e-liquid chamber, an atomiser and a battery. The atomiser has a wicking material that draws the e-liquid onto a battery-powered heating coil. Optimal vapour production depends on an efficient supply of e-liquid to the heating coil, which is limited by the wicking and rate of e-liquid evaporation10,11,12. Power levels that produce aerosol beyond the ability of the wick to resupply the liquid to the coil may result in overheating of the atomizer coil and consequently overheating of the e-liquid10,11. Different types of wicking material, varying in size and shape, have been used in e-cigarettes3,13.
FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS, including components and parts of ENDS but excluding accessories. An outbreak of EVALI in late 2019 and early 2020 put thousands of people in the hospital. Since then, EVALI cases have been declining, but people who vape can still get EVALI. Children are exposed to e-cigarette advertising online and on TV, in magazines and billboards. Although it is illegal for e-cigarettes to be sold to youth under age 21, they can be ordered online. While flavors were nationally banned in 2019, this ban excludes mint and menthol flavors.
However, it has been reported that the heating process can lead to the generation of new decomposition compounds that may be hazardous [4, 5]. The levels of nicotine, which is the key addictive component of tobacco, can also vary between the commercially available e-liquids, and even nicotine-free options are available. For this particular reason, e-cigarettes are often viewed as a smoking cessation tool, given that those with nicotine can prevent smoking craving, yet this idea has not been fully demonstrated [2, 6, 7].
They are not recommended for non-smokers and cannot be sold to people under 18 years old. In recent years, e-cigarettes have become a very popular stop smoking aid in the UK. Passengers are required to take effective measures for preventing accidental activation of the heating element of the device when transporting the devices. See the FAA regulations for examples of effective measures. Each lithium ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.
Studies have found that nearly two-thirds of adult e-cigarette users plan to quit, and almost a quarter of adolescents want to quit and have made a quit attempt. We hope this article helps you feel a little more secure about your choice of vaping products. They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. These findings suggest that vaping can cause significant changes to the inner lining of blood vessels, said study lead author Alessandra Caporale, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Structural, Physiologic, and Functional Imaging at Penn. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. First, some e-cigarette flavours positively affect smoking cessation outcomes among smokers [102]. Second, e-cigarettes have been described to improve smoking cessation rate only among highly-dependent smokers and not among conventional smokers, suggesting that the individual degree of nicotine dependence plays an important role in this process [97]. Third, the general belief of their relative harmfulness to consumers' health compared with conventional combustible tobacco [103]. And finally, the exposure to point-of-sale marketing of e-cigarette has also been identified to affect the smoking cessation success [96].

Despite the lack of carcinogenicity evidence, it has been reported that nicotine promotes tumour cell survival by decreasing apoptosis and increasing proliferation [49], indicating that it may work as a "tumour enhancer". In a very recent study, chronic administration of nicotine to mice (1 mg/kg every 3 days for a 60-day period) enhanced brain metastasis by skewing the polarity of M2 microglia, which increases metastatic tumour growth [50]. Assuming that a conventional cigarette contains 0.172–1.702 mg of nicotine [51], the daily nicotine dose administered to these animals corresponds to 40–400 cigarettes for a 70 kg-adult, which is a dose of an extremely heavy smoker.
